Project Spotlight: Painting the Brick Made All the Difference!

Project Summary

Emily moved into her dream home in the heart of Fishers, Indiana last year, but there was one issue. The Exterior was slightly dated in her opinion. The home features a lot of red brick, which she didn’t love but she wasn’t sure if painting the brick was a good idea. The home also had gray stone and wood siding. The combination of all these elements made the exterior appear a little busy, and Emily was looking for a more modern and sophisticated look. She chose to paint the brick and siding white which simplified the color palette and allowed the gray stone to be more of a focal point on the home.

Problem to Solve

The biggest problem to solve was the amount of painted brick in this project. Painting the brick on a home can be a very tricky task. Bricks are much more porous than regular siding or wood, meaning they are quick to absorb paint if you aren’t using the proper materials or technique. Additionally, brick does not dry or warm up as quickly as other materials. Since a surface must be completely dry and it is ideal to paint with a surface temperature above 50 degrees, the weather can very easily get in the way when painting the brick.

Lastly, this house’s architecture was very detailed. For example, the stone portion of the house had red brick detailing around the windows and beneath the trim. Small areas like these are much more difficult and time-consuming to paint.

Our Solution

Luckily, ONiT Painting has a lot of experience with painted brick. We have specific cleaning and surface preparation processes in place to maximize the efficiency of the project and the durability of the paint. Additionally, since we use Sherwin-Williams paint we have top-of-the-line materials to choose from, including products specifically designed for Brick.

We put a larger crew on this project to accommodate the size of the home. This ensured that the project would be completed in a reasonable amount of time. Additionally, our Project Manager, Melvin Portillo, oversaw the project diligently to make sure our systems and processes were being utilized and the work was being completed to our high standards.

As far as weather is concerned, we cannot do much to control that. What we can do is be proactive by keeping a close eye on the forecast, and communicating any changes in scheduling to the customer immediately.

Our Painting Process

    • We power wash all surfaces that will be painted to remove dirt and mildew. This step is not only good for your home, it also prevents any rough patches in the painting and makes it much easier for the paint to adhere.

    • We will apply one-two finish coats based on the goal of your project. With color changes, we usually recommend two coats to achieve a uniform finish.
    • We will clean up daily upon completion, leaving your home and property exactly as we found it. You’d never know we were there if it wasn’t for the beautiful paint job!
    • Our Project Manager will complete a final inspection to ensure that the entire scope of work has been completed and our quality standards have been met.

The Final Result

In the end, the house looks beautiful! Painting the brick was the perfect choice for this home. The new soft white and gray color palette is extremely elegant and makes the home look new and refreshed. Take a look at these before and after photos to see the difference!
